How to solve polluted road runoff explained

As climate change is leading to more and heavier rains, more and more pollutants are consequently flowing from the road into nature. Today, the surface water is often piped to rivers and straight out into fjords and seas.

“It is not a smart way to do it. We would rather use nature-based solutions,” says researcher Sondre Meland at Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

In collaboration with the Municipality of Oslo, Bymiljøetaten, NIVA has created a video to convey the challenge of polluted road runoff flowing into rivers and fjords and how green, nature-based solutions such as rainbeds can help solve this problem. Watch the full video here.
