Decentralized wastewater treatment system that provides a secondary function as green parking, enabling a portion of treated wastewater (70 – 30%) to be reused onsite for toilet flushing. This green solution makes circular water use in urban areas possible.
Main Activities
The Phytoparking of 76m² treats the wastewater of 105PE guests at a campsite: 44m² for grey water and 32m² for black. This space-saving solution has many advantages in urban environments where space is precious. The Phytoparking can be used as a parking lot, as a park for with photovoltaic panels or it can even be placed in a shed. The Phytoparking was successfully installed despite local constraints caused by archaeological heritage and existing infrastructure.
Results
The Phytoparking is an efficient decentralized system that meets Flemish discharge limits, effectively removing organic matter, nutrients, micropollutants, and pathogens from grey and black water. It achieves over 90% removal for TSS, BOD, and ammonium, with COD removal at 91.6% for black water and 83.3% for grey water. Designed for circular water use, it enables safe reuse of treated grey water for toilet flushing. Over two seasons, 71% (389m³) of treated water was reused by 18,071 visitors. The pilot contributes to advancing decentralized wastewater treatment solutions.

This resilient pilot efficiently treats wastewater during both high and low seasons at a campsite, adapting to fluctuating loads with low energy consumption and minimal maintenance. Its decentralized design makes it suitable for various urban applications, including residential areas, offices, hotels, and public spaces. The system requires no skilled personnel, has low operational costs, integrates into landscapes, and does not contribute to the urban heat island effect. By enabling safe water reuse and complying with EU and WHO standards, Phytoparking promotes sustainable, decentralized wastewater treatment solutions.
