MULTISOURCE Project Webinar to Unveil Scientific Results on the Effectiveness of Urban Blue-Green Solutions
The MULTISOURCE project invites stakeholders, researchers, urban planners, and environmental professionals to a crucial webinar titled: “Do Blue-Green Solutions Work in Urban Environments? Scientific Results from 2 Years of Monitoring of 3 MULTISOURCE Pilot Projects”. The event will take place online on Monday, May 27th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM CEST.
This insightful webinar will share significant scientific findings gathered over two years from three pioneering Nature-Based Solution (NBS) pilots within the MULTISOURCE project. With a special focus on the removal efficiencies for pathogens and pharmaceuticals, the session will explore how cities can effectively integrate green infrastructure to store, treat, and reuse wastewater at building and neighbourhood scales, paving the way for truly water-smart urban environments.
In collaboration with Embuild Flanders, the webinar will also examine valuable lessons learned that can be applied to the forthcoming Waterwijzer project in Flanders.
Attendees will discover detailed results and practical insights from:
-
Rhizosph’air Aerated French Wetland (France): An innovative, compact (1m²/inhabitant) technology treating sludge and wastewater, resilient even during extreme rainfall, with a capital cost of approximately €200/m². Presented by Ecobird (English).
-
Phytoparking (Ypres, Belgium): A dual-purpose decentralized system functioning as both a wastewater treatment facility and a green parking area, achieving 30-60% on-site reuse of treated water for toilet flushing. Presented by Rietland (Dutch).
-
Green Roof Comparison (Germany & Belgium): Analysis of different green roof types, comparing their performance in enhancing biodiversity, retaining rainwater, and providing building cooling effects. Presented by UFZ (English) and H2pOwer – IBIC (Dutch).
This webinar offers a unique opportunity to understand their effectiveness, particularly concerning challenging contaminants, and to discuss their potential for wider replication to build more resilient and sustainable cities.
The agenda includes introductions by Embuild Flanders and Rietland, detailed presentations on each pilot project’s results (including relevance to VLAREM II standards where applicable), dedicated Q&A sessions for both wetlands and green roofs, and concluding remarks on lessons for circular water use and climate adaptation in Flanders. The webinar will feature presentations in both Dutch and English, with moderation facilitating multilingual Q&A.
This event is essential for anyone involved in urban water management, sustainable building, environmental policy, and the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions. To register for the webinar, click here.
