Pilot 3: Belgium – Rietland – Phytoparking

Designed and constructed by Rietland, the Phytoparking pilot in Belgium treats pre-treated wastewater and has shown to be an efficient decentralized system that meets the discharge limits set by Flemish legislation. This space-saving solution has many advantages in urban environments where space is precious.

The phytoparking can be used as a parking lot, as a park for with photovoltaic panels or it can even be placed in a shed. This resilient pilot treats both the wastewater in low and high season of a camp site. The system is appropriate for a wide range of urban applications due to its low energy consumption and ability to manage a fluctuating load.

The Phytoparking was successfully installed despite local constraints caused by archaeological heritage and existing infrastructure. It removes organic matter, nutrients, micro pollutants, and pathogens from both grey and black water. The system is designed for circular water use, so treated grey water can be used for toilet flushing. The findings from the Phytoparking pilot contributes to the broader understanding of decentralised wastewater treatment.
