Pilot 5: Spain – ICRA – Greenwall
The ICRA greenwall pilot in Spain focused on treating greywater and demonstrated its effectiveness in supplying treated water for toilet flushing, complying with both European and Spanish regulations. During the monitoring period, the pilot tested the maintenance of the planted surface area and monitored co-benefits such as stakeholder engagement, increased green area, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.
Challenges included significant delays due to intellectual property rights issues with the WetWall design. As a result, the pilot monitored was another type of green wall originally built for the HOUSEFUL project. Despite these delays, the MULTISOURCE project ensured continuity of the monitoring activities.
The findings from the ICRA greenwall pilot contribute to the broader understanding of greenwall systems and their potential for greywater treatment and reuse. A hybrid configuration, combining a green wall and an ozonation unit, was considered for this pilot. The insights gained can inform future implementations of similar systems, emphasizing the importance of addressing intellectual property challenges and ensuring continuous monitoring for optimal performance.
